Attempt to save classmate in rough seas ends in multiple deaths near Alexandria
Alexandria, Egypt – Seven young people died in the Mediterranean Sea after a rescue attempt turned fatal along the coast west of Alexandria.
The incident occurred during an outing involving about 150 students. Despite a red flag prohibiting swimming, one student entered the water on Saturday and was quickly overwhelmed by high waves.
Fellow students attempted to pull her to safety but were themselves swept away by strong currents. The Health Ministry confirmed that six victims, aged between 15 and 21, drowned in the effort.
The following day, recovery teams located another body, identified as a man of around 20 who had also gone into the sea to help, according to local news site Al-Masri al-Jum. In addition, 24 others who nearly drowned were treated by medical staff.
The disaster highlights the persistent dangers of ignoring warning signs on Egypt’s Mediterranean beaches, where rip currents and rough waters are frequent hazards.
