An electric streetcar in Lisbon derailed on Wednesday, killing at least 15 people and injuring 18 more. Portuguese television showed the yellow-and-white vehicle overturned on its narrow hillside track. The crash happened around 6 pm during the busy evening rush hour.
Emergency Crews Work at the Scene
The impact crumpled the top and sides of the funicular, leaving wreckage strewn across the road. Dozens of emergency workers rushed to the site to rescue passengers and secure the area. Local media reported that officials have not yet identified the cause of the disaster.
President and Nation React to Tragedy
President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa expressed condolences to families of victims and all those affected. The funicular, named Glória, usually carries more than 40 seated and standing passengers. Lisbon residents regularly depend on it to travel the steep city hill.
