OpenAI said it considered alerting Canadian police months before a school shooting in British Columbia.
The company had flagged an account linked to Jesse Van Rootselaar in June for possible violent activity.

At the time, OpenAI decided the case did not meet the threshold for law enforcement referral.
The firm said it found no evidence of an imminent or credible plan to harm others.
Its policy requires a clear and immediate risk before contacting authorities.

After the attack, OpenAI shared information with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
The shooting left eight people dead in the town of Tumbler Ridge before the 18-year-old took their own life.
Victims included a teaching assistant and several students.

Police said the suspect had previous mental health-related contact with officers.
    The motive remains unknown.

The case has renewed debate about how tech companies assess threats and when they should involve law enforcement.
It is Canada’s deadliest mass killing since the 2020 Nova Scotia attacks.
