Surgeons in China have successfully transplanted a genetically modified pig lung into a brain-dead human recipient, marking the first reported case of its kind. The transplanted lung functioned for nine days without triggering hyperacute rejection or infection, though it did eventually show fluid buildup and progressive antibody-driven damage. The procedure, described in Nature Medicine, involved a lung from a Chinese Bama Xiang pig with six genetic modifications to reduce immune rejection.
Challenges and Future Prospects
Experts caution that while this represents an important step in xenotransplantation research, pig lungs face unique hurdles compared with other organs like kidneys and hearts. The lung’s constant exposure to the external environment makes it highly sensitive to infections and immune responses. Researchers stress that more work is needed to refine genetic engineering, improve immunosuppressive treatments, and test long-term viability. Alternatives such as regenerating human donor lungs with stem cells or making unsuitable donor lungs transplant-ready may offer nearer-term solutions to the global organ shortage.
