Idrissa Gueye was met with applause from his Everton teammates after apologising for his red card incident during Monday’s win at Manchester United, where he was sent off for striking teammate Michael Keane.

The 36-year-old became the first Premier League player in 17 years to be dismissed for hitting a teammate after slapping Keane in the 13th minute, following a misplaced pass that nearly led to a Bruno Fernandes chance. Despite playing with 10 men for almost the entire match, Everton held on to secure a memorable 1–0 victory.

After the match, Gueye addressed the squad in the dressing room and apologised directly to Keane and the team for leaving them in a difficult position. His words were warmly received and he was given a round of applause.

Although manager David Moyes played down the incident publicly, Everton are still expected to apply internal disciplinary measures, including a possible fine. Gueye will now serve a three-match suspension and could also miss further games if called up by Senegal for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Gueye later issued a public apology on social media, taking full responsibility for his actions and promising it would not happen again.
