Sir David Attenborough’s new BBC series Kingdom captures extraordinary wildlife moments — including a lion rescuing a pregnant hyena from a pack of wild dogs.
Filmed over five years in Zambia’s Luangwa Valley, the series follows lions, hyenas, leopards, and wild dogs as they battle for survival. “Only nature could write this script,” said executive producer Mike Gunton.
Narrated by Attenborough, Kingdom shows newborn lion cubs, daring rescues, and rare behaviors such as a hyena hiding a carcass underwater. Yet it also highlights threats like habitat loss and deadly snare traps.
Scientific consultant Dr Matthew Becker of the Zambia Carnivore Programme said the footage offers vital data for conservation. Despite the dangers, the series delivers a message of resilience. As editor Simon Blakeney said: “It’s a challenge, but it’s not hopeless.”
