Piastri Takes Commanding Win as Norris Retires in Dutch GP Heartbreak

Oscar Piastri strengthened his grip on the Formula 1 title race with a dominant victory at Zandvoort, while teammate and main rival Lando Norris suffered a devastating retirement just seven laps from the finish.

The Australian was untouchable from pole, controlling the race through light rain and three safety-car restarts to secure a flag-to-flag win. But as he celebrated, Norris was left sitting disconsolately on the Dutch dunes, his McLaren smoking from an oil leak that cruelly ended what had looked like a certain second place.

The retirement leaves Piastri 34 points clear in the drivers’ standings — a swing that could prove pivotal with nine races to go. Norris, however, remained composed in defeat, admitting the blow “hurts in a championship point of view” but vowing to regroup for Monza.

Elsewhere, Lewis Hamilton’s much-anticipated fresh start with Ferrari ended in bitter disappointment. The seven-time champion crashed out on lap 21 after losing grip on a damp patch of track, apologizing to his team before walking back to the paddock. Despite the setback, both Hamilton and Ferrari boss Fred Vasseur insisted the weekend still showed signs of progress.

Behind Piastri, Max Verstappen salvaged second for Red Bull in front of his home fans, while rookie Isack Hadjar scored a remarkable maiden podium in third for Racing Bulls. George Russell claimed fourth for Mercedes, with Alex Albon fifth for Williams.

For Norris and Hamilton, Zandvoort was a weekend of lost opportunity. For Piastri, it may be remembered as the moment he took a decisive step toward becoming world champion.
