Trump urges EU to impose steep tariffs on China and India

Donald Trump is calling on the European Union to introduce tariffs of up to 100 percent on China and India. His goal is to increase pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin and push toward ending the war in Ukraine.

Trump calls for tougher approach to Moscow

The US president raised his demand during a meeting with EU officials on Tuesday. Both sides examined new steps to weaken Russia’s economy. According to a source, Trump insisted on the highest possible tariffs against China and India. He had promised to end the conflict on the “first day” of his presidency. But negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv remain blocked. Meanwhile, Russian strikes on Ukraine have intensified sharply.

Trump set to speak with Putin

Trump also revealed on Tuesday that he plans to call Putin soon. He said the conversation may happen this week or early next week. China and India remain two of the largest buyers of Russian oil. Their imports provide crucial support to Russia’s economy and fund its war.

    United States already penalized India

Last month, Washington announced tariffs of 50 percent on Indian products. The move included a 25 percent penalty tied to India’s trade with Russia. The EU has pledged to reduce dependence on Russian energy. Still, almost 19 percent of its natural gas imports come from Moscow. Should the EU follow Trump’s demand, it would mark a clear policy shift. Europe has so far leaned on sanctions rather than tariffs.

Treasury secretary presses Europe for support

Trump’s demand came after remarks from US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. He said Washington is prepared to escalate pressure further. But he stressed that stronger backing from Europe is essential.

    Russia steps up aerial attacks

A Russian missile struck Ukraine’s main government building in Kyiv over the weekend. Analysts called the strike both symbolic and escalatory. Ukraine faced its heaviest air assault since the start of the war. Officials reported Russia used 810 drones and 13 missiles. On Tuesday, more than 20 civilians died in Donetsk after a Russian glide bomb hit them while they queued for pensions.

    Trump threatens new sanctions

Trump said he was “not happy with the whole situation.” He warned Moscow of harsher sanctions. He had made similar pledges before, but Putin ignored them. A summit in Alaska last month ended without progress on peace.

    Trade negotiations with India continue

Trump also confirmed that Washington and New Delhi are still negotiating trade barriers. He said he will call Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the coming weeks. Trump expressed optimism for a “successful conclusion.” Modi echoed Trump’s confidence and praised their partnership. “Our teams are working to finalize the discussions quickly. I also look forward to speaking with President Trump,” he said.

Warming ties between Washington and New Delhi

Analysts view Trump’s comments as a sign of reconciliation after earlier talks collapsed. Just last week, Trump stressed the “special relationship” with India. “There’s nothing to worry about,” he said. “Sometimes we just have small disagreements.”
