Western leaders push coordinated measures to hit Moscow’s economy

WASHINGTON, Sept 9 — In response to intensified Russian attacks on Ukraine, U.S. and European officials convened in Washington to discuss new, synchronized sanctions aimed at limiting Russia’s financial and energy capabilities. The talks focused on bolstering economic pressure on Moscow and aligning transatlantic responses.

The discussions took place at the U.S. Treasury Department and included Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and EU Sanctions Envoy David O’Sullivan. Key topics included expanding restrictions on Russian oil exports and refining operations, which remain vital to the Kremlin’s revenue streams. Officials stressed the importance of a unified strategy to maximize the impact of any new measures.

Trump Signals Potential “Second Phase” Measures

President Donald Trump, participating remotely, suggested that the U.S. may move forward with a “second phase” of sanctions. This could involve secondary tariffs on nations like India and China that continue to purchase Russian oil, aiming to reduce Russia’s income from international energy sales and discourage indirect support for Moscow.

    EU Prepares Latest Sanctions Package

The European Union is set to roll out its 19th sanctions package, targeting Russian banks and energy companies. EU representatives emphasized that the package would further restrict Moscow’s access to global financial markets and limit its ability to export energy, reinforcing the coordinated Western approach.

Rising Urgency Following Major Russian Assaults

The sanctions talks were prompted by a large-scale Russian strike on Ukraine, involving more than 800 drones and 13 missiles across over 30 sites. The attacks caused widespread damage to infrastructure and significant casualties, intensifying calls from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for stronger international sanctions and support.

    Outlook

The U.S. and EU’s collaborative efforts highlight a commitment to coordinated economic pressure against Russia in response to its continued aggression in Ukraine. While the effectiveness of the new measures will depend on enforcement and international cooperation, the talks signal a firmer, united stance from Western powers amid escalating conflict.
