United fall short as Amorim warns of stalled progress

A year after his first caution

Ruben Amorim offered another clear warning about inflated expectations. Manchester United beat Everton 4–0 in this fixture last season, yet he predicted turbulence ahead. One year later, his team exposed the same flaws. A fierce confrontation between Idrissa Gueye and Michael Keane shaped the early action. United played 77 minutes against ten men but failed to use their advantage.

United lose direction despite numerical edge

Amorim watched his players struggle in crucial moments. Patrick Dorgu and Leny Yoro gave the ball away under no pressure as Everton increased their momentum. Amad Diallo made poor decisions while replacing the injured Matheus Cunha. Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes missed clear chances in promising attacks. Joshua Zirkzee and Kobbie Mainoo failed to strengthen their arguments for more minutes while pushing for World Cup involvement. Senne Lammens reacted weakly to Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s decisive strike. Zirkzee forced Jordan Pickford into a late save, but no sustained threat followed.

    Amorim provides a sharp evaluation

Amorim warned before the match that a positive run could collapse quickly. He said United remained far from the level needed to compete for top positions. United led at Nottingham Forest and Tottenham but failed to finish either game. They needed late goals to avoid defeat. This match offered a chance to climb to fifth. Matching last season’s score would have lifted them to fourth. Instead they lost at home against ten men for most of the match. United had never lost a league game at Old Trafford after an opponent received a red card. They had won 36 and drawn 10 of the previous 46.

Amorim said the crowd expected a major step forward. He said his players were not ready to make it. He repeated that United remained far from the standard required at this club.

    Uncertain direction for United’s rebuild

One year after Amorim’s first match, the key question concerns how far the team still must travel. United have no European distractions and invested £250m in the summer. They sit tenth but remain close to the top four. Their upcoming fixtures offer valuable chances to pick up points. When they finished eighth under Erik ten Hag, the club deemed that result unacceptable.

Amorim described frustration and disappointment. He said Everton deserved their win. He said United must win these matches regardless of circumstances. He agreed with David Moyes that the Gueye-Keane confrontation showed desire. He wants that intensity from his own players, but without disciplinary issues.

He said fighting does not mean players dislike each other. He said fighting shows urgency and responsibility. He said he wants his players to fight each other after losing the ball because that prevents goals.

A worrying dip after signs of improvement

After progress in October and a manager of the month award, November brought regression. The team still lacks a clear identity. Amorim appears to share the same uncertainty. He said he fears returning to last season’s mindset, when every match felt threatening. He said he fears slipping back into anxiety. He said avoiding that return remains his greatest concern.

He said the team must work together. He said the players show effort but must improve.
