George Russell delivered one of the finest laps of his career to take pole position for the Singapore Grand Prix, strengthening his case as Mercedes continue talks over extending his contract. The Briton outpaced Max Verstappen by nearly two-tenths of a second at the Marina Bay circuit, with Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris unable to match his pace in third and fifth.
Verstappen, however, was furious after abandoning his final lap, blaming Norris for obstructing him on an in-lap. The world champion claimed he lost downforce in the closing corners while following the McLaren. “That is what happens when there is a car in front of you,” Verstappen said, hinting at lingering frustration. Norris rejected the criticism outright, saying: “They always complain … I was like three seconds ahead or something.”
Whether Verstappen could have matched Russell’s time remains uncertain, but the Dutchman had already been behind on his first attempt while Russell continued to improve. Mercedes’ new front wing upgrade appeared to give the team a vital edge, and Russell’s pole came despite him still recovering from illness.
Behind the front two, Kimi Antonelli impressed in fourth for Mercedes, while Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc qualified sixth and seventh. Williams endured a nightmare evening, with both cars disqualified after their DRS was found to be outside legal parameters, relegating Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz to the back of the grid.
McLaren, meanwhile, can wrap up the constructors’ title in Singapore, needing only 13 points to seal their second consecutive crown. With Piastri leading the drivers’ championship by 25 points and Russell chasing a statement win, Sunday’s race promises high drama – starting with the run to turn one.
