Five New Sites Announced
OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank have unveiled plans for five new U.S. data-center sites as part of the massive Stargate initiative, a multiyear program that aims to mobilize up to $500 billion in private-sector investment for artificial intelligence infrastructure. The companies said the new sites — in Shackelford County, Texas; Doña Ana County, New Mexico; Milam County, Texas; Lordstown, Ohio; and an additional Midwest location — will expand total planned capacity to roughly 7 gigawatts.
Partners’ Roles and Project Scope
Oracle is leading development on three of the new sites, while SoftBank is partnering on two. The announcement follows earlier Stargate commitments, bringing overall pledged investment toward the $400 billion mark. OpenAI executives described the initiative as essential for powering future AI systems, with Oracle providing cloud infrastructure and SoftBank supporting network and deployment efforts.
Economic and Infrastructure Impact
The companies project tens of thousands of jobs linked to construction and long-term operations, though details on permits, utility interconnections, and incentive agreements have yet to be fully disclosed. Energy analysts note that projects of this scale will require significant new grid capacity and water resources, particularly in Texas and New Mexico. Stargate’s leaders frame the program as a critical step in securing U.S. leadership in advanced AI, while local governments prepare for the economic opportunities and infrastructure challenges the facilities will bring.
