Once largely untouched, Antarctica is now seeing record numbers of visitors. Annual arrivals have jumped from fewer than 8,000 in the 1990s to more than 124,000 in the 2023–24 season, with projections suggesting up to 450,000 visitors by 2034. Researchers warn that this rapid rise is leaving a deep human footprint on the world’s last great wilderness. A new study in Nature Sustainability shows concentrations of toxic metals near human activity zones are now 10 times higher than 40 years ago, linked to emissions from ships, aircraft and vehicles.
Pollution, Wildlife Disturbance and Melting Snow
Tourism contributes far more than carbon emissions – each trip averages 5.44 tonnes of CO2 per passenger. Visitors disturb wildlife, trample fragile mosses and lichens, and increase the risk of spreading invasive species. Scientists are especially concerned about black carbon from ships and aircraft, which darkens snow, speeds up melting, and can make a single tourist responsible for melting up to 100 tons of snow. Research bases also add to the pressure, with expeditions leaving a footprint up to ten times greater than that of tourists.
Mitigation Efforts Fall Short
While the Antarctic Treaty bans heavy fuel oil and tour operators enforce biosecurity and wildlife-watching rules, experts say these steps are insufficient. Hybrid ships and regulated landings help, but only a broader shift to renewable energy and reduced fossil fuel use can slow the accelerating damage. For now, beneath the pristine white landscapes admired from cruise decks, Antarctica’s ecosystems are quietly bearing the cost of human presence.
